The inspection nobody warns you about: monthly, ungraded, and it does not stop

Score badly enough on a re-inspection and the Health Department may come back roughly every month until you get under 28 — or closes you for persistent violations.

Most operators understand the cycle: initial inspection, and a re-inspection if you did not earn an A. What is less well known is what happens when the re-inspection also goes badly.

Monitorearing inspections

If a restaurant performs very poorly on its re-inspection, the Health Department may keep inspecting it roughly once a month until it scores below 28 — or closes it for serious and persistent violations.

These visits are scored but not graded. They do not produce a new card. They exist to watch.

What that actually feels like

It means the clock never resets. You are not waiting five to seven months for the next cycle; you are being visited again in four weeks, and again after that, by people who have read the last two reports.

It also means the improvement has to hold. A kitchen that can be got right for one morning is not what this process is measuring. It is measuring whether the conditions stay right when nobody is expecting anyone.

Getting out of it

The exit is a score below 28. That is the number.

Which makes the arithmetic worth doing properly. If you are scoring in the low thirties, you are two or three well-chosen fixes from the exit — and those fixes are almost certainly conditions rather than instances.

Go back through the reports and find what appears in all of them. Repeat findings are what keep a score elevated, because a condition that was not fixed produces the same violation at the same or a higher condition level every visit.

The other inspections that are not graded

Monitorearing visits are not the only ungraded ones. The Department also scores but does not grade:

  • Initial inspections that result in 14 points or more
  • Inspections at restaurants not yet open to the public
  • An inspection at a restaurant seeking to reopen after a closure
  • Some inspections in response to complaints

Until you have had a graded inspection, the city lists you as Not Yet Graded.

Why this matters for a new operator

If you have just opened, you may go weeks with no letter in the window and a public record that says Not Yet Graded. That is normal and it is not a black mark.

It also means your first graded inspection is genuinely your first impression, and it will sit in a public dataset for años. The pre-opening period is the cheapest time in your restaurant's life to find out what is wrong — which is exactly what the $100 educational inspection is for.
